When we look for a theme in WordPress, we get an idea of what a theme looks like from the WordPress theme preview image.
If you are a theme developer and you have developed a theme or child theme, you will also want to display your theme preview.
To display the WordPress theme preview image follow the steps below:
- First take a screenshot of your theme by applying your theme to a demo site.
- Open any image editing tools and resize your screenshot to 1200X900px.
- Save that image as a screenshot.png inside the top level of your theme directory i.e. wp-content>themes>your-theme-directory>screenshot.png
According to WordPress, the other valid image file format i.e. .jpg, .gif, .jpeg is not recommended for screenshot file. Usually, the WordPress theme preview image is shown as 387x290px. The oversized image is used for high-resolution viewing on HiDPI displays.
